Speaker of the House James Amann is asking the state Department of Public Health to investigate an alleged outbreak of an antibiotic-resistant bacterium, known popularly as the "superbug," at a prison.
In a letter to Public Health Commissioner Dr. J. Robert Galvin this week, Amann and state Rep. Karen Jarmoc, D-Enfield, said they had been told 10 inmates at Corrigan-Radgowski Correctional Center in Uncasville had been diagnosed with methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA. Brian Garnett, spokesman for the state Department of Correction, said Tuesday there is no outbreak, which he defined as a large number of cases emerging simultaneously. He said there are two cases at Corrigan-Radgowski and 39 in the entire prison population of 19,600 in 18 facilities as of the end of August. MRSA is "very likely to occur" in many facilities that house large numbers of people, Garnett said. Amann and Jarmoc said in the letter that their information came from the union representing correction officers at Corrigan-Radgowski, an inmate's family and media reports. "As you can understand, due to the highly infectious nature of this disease, the people who work at Corrigan-Radgowski are extremely worried for themselves and their families," the letter said. Jarmoc chairs a task force Amann created this summer to study prisoner and correction officer safety issues, which will meet for the first time today at 10 a.m. at the Legislative Office Building in Hartford. Garnett said the correction department has procedures in place to deal with MRSA, including treatment with effective antibiotics, prevention education among inmates and staff training. William Gerrish, spokesman for the state health department, said he had not seen the letter requesting an investigation, but the department would provide whatever technical assistance to prisons it can.
