New London, Conn. —

A convicted felon pleaded not guilty Tuesday to charges he used a homemade shank to assault two correctional officers at Corrigan Radgowski Correctional Institution in Montville.
Bobby J. Beale, who already is serving a 37-year prison sentence for murder, walked into the New London courtroom Tuesday with wrist and ankle shackles attached by a chain around his waist.

The 25-year-old motioned to Judge Susan B. Handy, saying, “I’m in a cell like this. They said this is because of a judge’s order.”

“So how am I supposed to go to the bathroom ... write my legal work. That’s crazy, yo,” he said.

“You’re not helping yourself with the attitude, sir,” Handy told Beale.

Beale faces charges of attempted murder, first-degree assault, assault on a correctional officer and possession of a dangerous weapon in a correctional facility.

The July 9 stabbing and other assaults on prison guards led to the announcement last month of the formation of a legislative task force to look into safety issues at the Department of Correction.
