Pontiac prison closing vote set Print E-mail
SPRINGFIELD -- A bipartisan legislative panel could vote Tuesday on whether the Pontiac Correctional Center should be closed. The Legislature's Commission on Government Forecasting and Accountability is scheduled to meet at 3 p.m. in Chicago to act on Gov. Rod Blagojevich's plan to close the maximum-security lock-up.

Blagojevich wants to shutter the prison and transfer inmates to a mostly unused prison in Thomson.

Opponents say the plan will devastate the Livingston County community.

State Rep. Rich Myers, R-Colchester, who is a co-chairman of the panel, said last week that he doesn't believe the panel will back Blagojevich's proposal.

"Based on what I saw and heard, I don't believe it has the support of lawmakers," Myers said.

State Sen. Dan Rutherford, R-Chenoa, agreed, saying Friday that evidence uncovered during the commission's hearings found that it doesn't make economic sense for the state to shutter the facility.

In fact, he said overcrowding within the state's prison system shows the need to keep Pontiac open as well as open the maximum-security portion of the prison in Thomson.

The commission's vote, however, is non-binding, so Blagojevich could ignore the verdict and shut down the Pontiac facility.
