Inadequate accommodation is causing serious overcrowding at the Kumasi Central Prison and this is gradually affecting the inmates psychologically. The Ashanti Regional Prisons Commander, DDP, Ambrose Salifu, revealed to the Parliamentary Select Committee on Defence and Interior during a familiarization visit to the prison.
The Prison’s Commander said due to the overcrowding of the prison rooms, the spreading of diseases like TB is on the increase and the situation has created panic among inmates about their future security. Mr. Salifu said the six prison stations have a total of 2,623 prisoners.
He said the Prison Command finds it difficult to feed the prisoners due to increase in prices of food stuffs and failure by government to pay suppliers on time. Mr. Salifu mentioned that suspects on remand are the major cause of the overcrowding due to the inadequate cell rooms. According to him, a cell room now takes 700 people instead of 80, attributing it to the frequency with which cases involving suspects on remand are adjourned by the courts some of which are over 10 years. He appealed to the Attorney General to intervene by ensuring speedy trial of such cases. Mr. Salifu appealed to government to help provide prison officers with accommodation.
