Luck finally ran out for Marlow Wayne Reynolds.

The 55-year-old convicted murderer was recaptured Sunday afternoon after eluding police for almost three weeks.

Reynolds, who escaped from Stringfellow Prison Unit in Rosharon on Sept. 9, found Hurricane Ike to be his first stroke of good fortune.

Most residents were evacuating Brazoria County and authorities were diverted to storm duty, leaving the Texas Department of Criminal Justice alone in the search for the fugitive.

Even the Brazoria Police Department officer that stopped Reynolds on Saturday morning let him go after the escapee provided a fake name, TDCJ Inspector General John Moriarty said.

"When it came to us having luck and him having luck, he had all the luck and we had none," Moriarty said.

Reynolds was serving a 40-year-prison sentence after being convicted in 2004 of killing a drinking buddy, Leslie Ledford, 36, in Liberty County.

Authorities, who had been searching the area for more than two weeks, received reports Saturday from witnesses who spotted Reynolds dashing into the woods.

Police dogs picked up the escapee's scent, Moriarty said.

On Sunday, correctional officers and the dogs found Reynolds around 5:30 p.m. hiding in what is believed to be an old dynamite hole in a heavily wooded area near the San Bernard River, Moriarty said.

"He grew up over there (Brazoria)," he said.

"He knew those woods like the back of his hands."

Reynolds, who was wearing blue jeans and long-sleeved plaid shirt, surrendered to officers and was taken into custody without incident.

He will appear before a magistrate in Brazoria County before returning to TDCJ's custody, said the department's spokeswoman Michelle Lyons.

He will face felony escape charges, which will bring additional prison time, as well as other possible charges.
