The wife of former Wayne High School Assistant Principal Kristopher Sennett burst into tears as his sentence was read during a hearing Friday afternoon in Allen Superior Court. “I love you.” The words of Tami Sennett resonated throughout the courtroom as her husband was led away in handcuffs. “Tell the kids I love them” were the last words she heard from him.

His 17-year-old victim — whom The News-Sentinel is not naming because she is the victim of a sex crime — sat still in the courtroom with her boyfriend and family at her side, presenting a smile only when her father offered her a lollipop. It was the end of an ordeal that began months earlier.

Sennett, 37, will serve two years in prison for child seduction — one year with good behavior — followed by one year of probation for engaging in a sexual relationship with the Wayne High School junior. He will also have to enroll in a sex-offender program and register as a sex offender for 10 years.

Sennett pleaded guilty to two charges of child seduction in a surprise hearing in Allen Superior Court on July 18. He admitted that he and the student exchanged amorous e-mails and had sexual contact twice.

Though the age of consent in Indiana is 16, a school employee can be charged with child seduction if he or she “engages with the child (at least 16 but under 18 years old) in sexual intercourse, deviate sexual conduct or any fondling or touching with the intent to arouse or satisfy the sexual desires of either the child or the adult.”

The relationship came to light when the girl's parents found a Valentine's Day card, e-mails and a love letter from the girl to Sennett in which she wrote, according to a Fort Wayne Police report, that “she loved being in bed with him and having his arms around her.”

The girl's parents called police, and Sennett was suspended from his job Feb. 22 and eventually fired. According to the police report, he told Fort Wayne Community Schools officials that “he was in love with (the girl) and admitted to having a relationship with her but did not admit anything sexual.”

At the time, Sennett's wife, Tami, was pregnant with his third child. She said Friday — wedding ring on her finger — he has made every effort to be a better family man.

“Kris has learned from his mistake and is trying to move on with his life,” she read from a prepared statement. Both she and her husband fought back tears as she spoke.

After his wife and two of their friends spoke, Sennett was given a chance to speak on his own behalf. With a tissue in hand, he offered apologies to his victim, her family, FWCS employees and the entire educational community.

“I know I cannot undo my poor choice. I let them down as well as others. I just hope that some day they will find a way to forgive me,” he said from a prepared statement, looking at the girl each time he said her name. Since his arrest, Sennett has forfeited his teaching license and gotten a job at the Memorial Coliseum as a parking attendant.

He denied comment before the hearing.

His victim — who came to court straight from school dressed in her cheerleading uniform — avoided looking in Sennett's direction during most of the hearing.

Her boyfriend escorted her to the courthouse with her family in tow, her grandmother carrying a handkerchief, trying to fight the tears in her eyes.

The girl told The News-Sentinel in April she was no longer sure of her feelings for Sennett. “I really have no idea (how I feel),” she said. “It's been forever since I've heard from him.”

Neither she nor her family spoke in court, and they declined comment following the sentencing.
